The baby girl in this video is a pretty accurate commentary on the future generation and their capacity to understand technology while failing to comprehend the simple things. Even at such a young age, she knows how to use her father's iPad, butflipping through a magazine is a huge challenge.
When my 8 year-old boy grabbed and held my hand last night it made me think of this. A fellow dad shared this with me and I’ve kept it close to remind myself.
SOONER THAN YOU THINK--
Sooner than you think
The echoes of your child's laughter
Will have faded from your house
Sooner than you think
Their bed will be empty
Their toys gone and their posters taken down
Sooner than you think
Their messy room will be clean
And used for something else
Sooner than you think
The house they lit up with their voices
Will be silent except for those soft sounds grown-ups make
Sooner than you think
The basketball hoop in the driveway
Will stand unused all year
Sooner than you think
The swing set in the backyard
Will be given away
Sooner than you think
Your child's spot at the dinner table
Will be empty
Sooner than you think
Your son or daughter will visit you
Just for awhile when they have time
Sooner than you think
Your house will be quiet
Between their visits
But today your child is home
And they want to spend time with you
Put off your work
And take that time
Because, one day . . .

Recommendations for Preventing Salmonellosis
Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away.
Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.
Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for ground meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer.
Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.
The products subject to recall today bear the establishment number "P-963" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on August 23, 24, 30 and 31 of this year.
As soon as we got the all clear to fly, the Majic Morning show flew to New York and broadcast live from our sister station WCBS. We reported back the things we saw and the way it felt at Ground Zero. We had never been attacked in my lifetime, and first the first time, we didn't feel safe, but we felt like it was like to be an American!

I talked with six people that lost their house in a fire today. One in Steiner Ranch and six in Bastrop. Every last one of them shared one thing in common--thanks. They were all grateful to make it out alive and for their pets and the few precious items they could carry with them.
They made it out with their lives, and not much else.
Then comes the hard part, the time to rebuild.
None of them have been even allowed back it to sift through the ashes.
My heart broke for each of the families, and for the hundreds more I didn't meet. They'll be in my prayers tonight.
The wall of smoke was mountainous.
Look close enough and you can see the fire within the smoke a hundred feet high.

A stage collapse prior to the Sugarland show at the Indiana State Fair Saturday night killed at least five people and injured 43. High winds were to blame for the accident, which occurred after opening act Sara Bareilles had finished her set. Those injured and confirmed dead were located in the VIP "Sugar Pit" area.
Following the incident, Sugarland tweeted, "We are alright. We are praying for our fans and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need our strength."
Sara Bareilles also tweeted, "I'm speechless and feel so helpless. Please send love and prayers to Indianapolis tonight. My heart aches for the lives lost."
Early Sunday morning, Indiana state police stated that there was a possibility of more deaths. Fair festivities were cancelled yesterday
Want to go âglampingâ this summer? âGlamping,â is short for âglamorous
camping.â Simply put, glamping encompasses outdoor wilderness experiences
that are somewhere between a hotel and a traditional campsite. Sure, you'll
sleep in tents, but they often have real beds with plush mattresses and Â
running water. The idea has been embraced by many who see the eco-friendly Â
benefits of mixing a traditionally free activity with a more luxurious vacation.
Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation announced Wednesday an immediate voluntary recall of approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey meat because it may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
"I'd say it's one of the larger recalls," said Joel Brandenberger, president of the Washington-based National Turkey Federation, where he has worked for more than 20 years. Indeed, that's the weight of more than 36 fully-loaded Boeing 747 commercial airplanes.

Being a bird isn't easy. Sometimes, they get tired and don't feel like flying -- especially when a human is trying to do something to get them to move. Watch as this bird refuses to fly away when the windshield wiper moves. Pretty talented bird, right?
Pippa's flash of fame lands her on top of mid-year best baby name list
The good folks at Nameberry have released a mid-year best baby names list, based on name searches conducted on their site. No surprise, the list reveals some of this yearâs newsmakers â from hottie royals (Pippa), to hottie Hollywood celebs (Mila) to crush-worthy literary classics (Holden, Archer). And yes, while Posh and Becks went with Harper, which was on a 2010 hottest name list, one of their rumored back-up names â Luna â was among those most searched so far.
Nameberryâs Hottest Baby Names of 2011:
It wasnât only Pippa Middletonâs bottom that attracted widespread attention at Aprilâs Royal Wedding; her name â both the familiar Pippa and the more formal Philippa â is the Number 1 hottest baby name of the year on Nameberry. Pippa ranks 35 on our most-searched list so far this year, after not appearing at all among our 200 most popular girlsâ names of 2010. While Kate is up too, itâs not nearly as hot as Pippa.
The soft, Biblical Asher takes the Hottest Boysâ Name spot by virtue of having unseated Henry as the all-time Number 1 name for boys on Nameberry. For the first time ever, Asher has pulled ahead to become Number 1.
New celebrity baby name trend: Star parents choose attention-getting name, then refuse to reveal the name theyâve picked, perhaps to heighten interest and publicity? Elula, the unusual Hebrew calendar name chosen by Isla Fisher and Sasha Baron Cohen for their second daughter, was not even in our database last year and now is the Number 38 most-searched name on Nameberry.
In a groundbreaking baby name move that feminists can applaud, boysâ names are for the first time being pushed into the limelight by the popularity of their female counterparts. The popularity of Everett, up 50 places on our most-searched list, was inspired by such stylish girlsâ choices as Eva and Evelyn.
The success of the bestselling novel The Paris Wife has catapulted the intriguing name of Hemingwayâs first wife, Hadley Richardson, 50 spots up our list this year over last.
Why does a starâs name sometimes languish for years, inspiring few little namesakes, and then suddenly take off? It happened most notably in the past decade with Ava, and now itâs Arlo, as in folksinger Guthrie, thatâs enjoying a popularity surge. Other o-ending names for boys heating up in 2011: Nico, Hugo, Otto. (Yes, Otto.)
Itâs the name of a gorgeous young star, Mila Kunis, PLUS it resembles a handful of trendy names -- Mia, Maya, Lila -- that are due for a hiatus. The result: A breakout baby name, up nearly 40 places this year.
Finn is already hot, but cousin Flynn, baby name choice of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, is taking off. This one also nods to the Golden Age of Hollywood and Errol Flynn.
Ada, Adele, Adeline, Adelaide
If itâs a vintage girlsâ name that starts with Ad-, it canât miss this year, it seems. All these choices are leapfrogging up the Nameberry list, taking over where too-trendy cousins Ava and Addison left off.
Literary baby names are hot right now, especially when theyâre not too literary: Think Holden, Atticus, and yes Harper. Archer, as in Henry Jamesâ Portrait of a Lady and Edith Whartonâs Age of Innocence, is perfect: Itâs unusual, classic yet contemporary-feeling, and thereâs no danger of anyone actually having read the books.
The last FedEx logo designed by Lindon Leader, is on top of my list. I am sure until now everyone must have noticed the hidden white arrow between âeâ and âxâ letters, symbolizing the âmovementâ but I find this concept irresistibly intelligent.
At first glance, the old Hartford Whalers logo clearly shows a whaleâs tail and a green W. Look closer, though, and youâll see that the white space forms an H, for Hartford.
Yummyyyâ¦I am loving to analyze my favorite choclate logo. You must be thinking what is there to find out as it clearly shows the Swiss Alps? It might be as Toblerone originated in Bern, Switzerland - A city whose name is rumored to mean, âCity of bearsâ. But when you look at it again you will find a bear in the logo. Incredibly surprising that we had it several times but never noticed it, right?
The SUN Microsystems logo was designed by Stanford Universityâs professor Vaughan Pratt, who skillfully arranged the letters âU and Nâ adjacent to each other forming the alphabetâSâ, when seen in perpendicular direction.
An amateur astronomer put together an awesome time-lapse video of the Australian night sky over the ocean. The clip includes 30 hours of exposure (don’t worry, it’s condensed down into two minutes and 41 seconds), which took over one year to compile.
The video montage includes clouds gliding across the heavens, sparking stars, moving waters and plenty more. Below, watch Alex Cherney’s award-winning video:
A dust storm up to 50 miles wide and a mile high descended on the Phoenix area on Tuesday night, grounding flights, forcing drivers to stop and causing thousands of power outages.
Towering over skyscrapers and grounding flights, the wall of dust swept across the desert from the south at around nightfall, blanketing downtown Phoenix.
The National Weather Service said strong winds with gusts of more than 60 miles per hour moved the dust cloud northwest through Phoenix and the cities of Avondale, Tempe and Scottsdale.
More than a dozen communities in the area also were placed under a severe thunderstorm watch.
An aspiring seagull videographer stole a GoPro video camera while it was set on record and took some great shots. Watch as it shows you what it can see when it flies in the air -- and catch some behind-the-scenes footage of it making noise near the camera.
Seagull stole my video camera in Cannes France. I found it on the castle wall, where I had to climb.
Baby hummingbirds are adorable, but they are twice as cute when one of them bonds with a young boy. Watch the boy teach the bird the ways of the world and help him learn how to fly. If this doesn't warm your heart, I don't know what what will.
The video has over a million views on Youtube
The followup from the boy:
This is a baby hummingbird I rescued after it was attacked.
The song is "Better Together" by Jack Johnson.
UPDATE!!! when she thought she was ready to leave (and she was) she flew off to her favorite patch of the back yard, and her instincts instantly kicked in, and now she's just like all the other hummingbirds. for those that are concerned that she has imprinted on humans and wouldn't survive in the wild, don't worry, she is thriving. she has even successfully migrated and returned back to my yard. and for those who think i didn't know what i was doing, i did NOT feed her plain sugar water. i went outside 3 times a day and caught flies from my compost bin in big bags, crushed them, and mixed them in as well. I also helped her learn to catch flies while flying (not in the video because you obviously wouldn't be able to see the flies). in the end, i don't think it could have worked out any better
Today I found out why zippers have a YKK on them.  The YKK stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (say that five times fast). In 1934 Tadao Yoshida founded Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (translated Yoshida Industries Limited). This company is now the worlds foremost zipper manufacturer, making about 90% of all zippers in over 206 facilities in 52 countries. In fact, they not only make the zippers, they also make the machines that make the zippers; no word on if they make the machines that make the parts that make up the machines that make the zippers.
Their largest factory in Georgia makes over 7 million zippers per day.
In any event, Mr. Yoshidaâs company zipped to number one by practicing the âCycle of Goodnessâ, as he called it. Namely, âNo one prospers unless he renders benefit to others.â Using this principle, he endeavored to create the best zippers out there that would hold up over long periods of time in the end product. This in turn would benefit both the manufacturers who used his zippers and the end customer and because of these things benefit his company with higher repeat and referral sales, thus completing the âCycle of Goodnessâ *zen moment*
So next time youâre zipping up, take a moment to remember Mr. Yoshida
Who says there's a recession going on?According to a new survey from the National Retail Federation, the average shopper will spend $106 on dad this Father's Day, up 13 percent from last year -- and the most in the survey's eight-year history.Of course, even this year's Father's Day takes a back seat to Mother's Day, where the average shopper spent $141.The top spending categories for dad include:
Grill Daddy. This gadget is a heavy-duty grill brush that drips water through the brush, creating steam. It really works. It comes in several styles and truly can make a filthy grill rack pretty darned clean. You can find them online for $12 to $50, depending on the model.
Cold Fire. This is a handy aerosol fire extinguisher that is inexpensive, doesn't take up much space and actually works. Priced about $20.
Big Top Cupcake. This silicone baking set makes it easy to make a fancy and unusual cupcake-shaped cake. Seriously. Also about $20.
Yoshi Blade. It's a ceramic knife that really outperforms many of its metallic brethren. Just remember, though, it's a slicing knife, not a chopper. About $20. (And if you want to know more about knives for outdoor uses, see our new guide to deals on knives.)
Furminator. This pet grooming tool isn't cheap, but it seems to work pretty well. It comes in a variety of sizes and styles (hence the price variability, starting at $12).
5Â "as seen on TV" products you can live without:
BarkOff. It's supposed to magically stop dogs from barking. Tell that to the dogs, if they can hear you over their barking. If you want to test it out anyway, you can order it for about $10.
Gyro Bowl. An interesting idea that gets a close-but-not-quite.â The bowl is supposed to keep little ones from spilling their food as they toddle around. It can work for the less active kid, but forget about it if you've got one of those high-energy models. About $13.
Robo Stir. This thing is supposed to keep stirring your soup, gravy or whatever while you're busy elsewhere. Stick with the spoon. About $11.
Snazzy Napper. OK, it's a blanket with holes so you can still breathe while you're sleeping in some public place. Eeesh. Get a room. Prices start at $15.
Jupiter Jack. The idea is to turn your car radio into a cellphone speaker. But a lot of folks complain it just doesn't work or only works a little bit, some of the time. That's not something you want to deal with when the gadget is intended to help make your driving experience easier. About $10.
Makes You Stink Like Hog Heaven
Throw away that musty old bacon cologne; there's a new eau de piglette here to make sweet porky love to your nostrils. Que, from Pork Barrel BBQ, was forged from the sweet crackling char of Mt. Oink.

Introduced Thomas the Train and Friends last night at the Long Center. It made me miss the way my boy Franke used to love him.
They still have tickets for today's 10:30 matinee and the show later tonight.
and here's an old picture of Franke and his mom meeting Thomas:
A batch of daring dwellings, including an eco-friendly igloo, a Hello Kitty dream house and a creative spin on a classic log cabin.
Faroe Islands, Denmark
This pair of identical igloos is near the village of Kvivik, in the Faroe Islands off the coast of Denmark. Each structure is about 300 square feet and features a kitchen, living room and loft with a double bed.
One Log House
This house is in pretty good condition â considering that the tree it's made from is more than 2,000 years old. Carved out of a 42-ton redwood, this wacky mobile home was "built" in 1946 by logger Art Schmock

When Ginny went to the movies, she had no idea that one preview in particular would interest her so much. Her boyfriend made a fake movie trailer about the story of their love and featured him asking her father for her hand in marriage. Watch her reaction as she sees the movie trailer dedicated to her.
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into his sixth day of âovertimeâ when an angel appeared and said, âYouâre doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.â
And the Lord said, âHave you read the specs on this order?
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic;
Have 180 movable parts... all replaceable;
Run on black coffee and leftovers;
Have a lap that disappears when she stands up;
A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair;
And six pairs of hands.â
The angel shook her head slowly and said, âSix pairs of hands... no way.â
âItâs not the hands that are causing me problems,â said the Lord. âItâs the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.â
âThatâs on the standard model?â asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. âOne pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, âWhat are you kids doing in there?â when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldnât but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, âI understand and I love youâ without so much as uttering a word.â
âLord,â said the angel, touching His sleeve gently, âGo to bed. Tomorrow...â
âI canât,â said the Lord, âIâm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick... can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger... and can get a nine-year-old to stand under a shower.â
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. âItâs too soft,â she sighed.
âBut sheâs tough!â said the Lord excitedly. âYou cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.â
âCan it think?â
âNot only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,â said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. âThereâs a leak,â she pronounced. âI told You You were trying to push too much into this model.â
âItâs not a leak,â said the Lord. âItâs a tear.â
âWhatâs it for?â
âItâs for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.â
âYou are a genius,â said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. âI didnât put it there,â He said.

If you didnât read the title of this article, and if you just glanced at these pictures, what would you think that was? Perhaps a beautiful piece of artwork created by a child? Or maybe a tapestry of colorful fabric? Who would ever guess that is a patch of three billion tulips?
Yep, this is where much of the worldâs tulips are grown each year. These particular flowers are in Holland, and they will be sent to supermarkets all over the world to be sold. Altogether, Holland produces about nine billion tulips each year, which equates to more than one for each person on the planet.
As you can see, tourists often gather around the flowers to inhale the aroma and appreciate this once a year phenomenon. I bet this is an incredible sight to see in person. It is only a short time each year when the colors of the flowers are this vibrant and rich.

Iowa bulldog Lucy Brown's slobber, sloth and bloodshot eyes helped the precocious pup grab the greatest crown a drooling canine can ever dream of.
The 3-year-old from Johnston, with a squat stance and slobber to spare, bested 49 dogs Monday to be named this year's "Beautiful Bulldog" for the Drake Relays in Iowa.
"She just thinks that the world goes around her. You know, Queen Lucy," said Nancy Brown, Lucy's owner, adding that the royal crown befits her beloved dog. "This is over the top."

Dyngus Day or Wet Monday (PolishÅmigus-Dyngus or lany poniedziaÅek) is the name for Easter Monday in Poland. In the Czech Republic it is called velikonoÄnà pondÄlà or pomlázka. In Slovakia veľkonoÄný pondelok (Easter Monday) is called Å ibaÄka/PolievaÄka or OblievaÄka. too. All countries practice a unique custom on this day.
In Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic traditionally, early in the morning boys awake girls by pouring a bucket of water on their head and striking them about the legs with long thin twigs or switches made from willow, birch or decorated tree branches; however, the earliest documented records of Dyngus Day in Poland are from the 15th century, almost half a millennium after Poland adopted Christianity.
One theory is that Dyngus originates from the baptism on Easter Monday of Mieszko I (Duke of the Polans, c. 935â992) in 966 AD, uniting all of Poland under the banner of Christianity. Dyngus and Åmigus were twin pagan gods; the former representing water and the moist earth.
If you're a parent, you know that getting your finicky kid to eat is like trying to push a bolder up a mountain of molasses. It isn't easy. A kid's menu, at best consists of about five or six things that he or she will eat. So what's a parent to do? Well, at a recent survey taken in a small US town, about 100 kids gave the answer to their five favorite foods, not counting desserts. While this survey no way dictates that all kids will answer the same, this should give you a pretty decent idea of what you're kid will eat if you're having problems getting food in his or her mouth. So without further ado, our top five kids' goods.
Coming in at number 5 was no surprise. Spaghetti and Meatballs was the overall number 5 choice. Kids seemed to like this more out of the can than home made, however. And no fancy sauces like Marinara. Just plain out tomato or meat sauce was all they needed. Plus, no grated cheese on top. And not too many meatballs. Just 3 or 4 would be enough. Serving your kid a plate of spaghetti and meatballs would be more than enough to put a smile on his or her face.
In the number 4 slot was another food that was no surprise. Fried chicken. Parents, don't bother making this at home. Overwhelmingly, kids voted on Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken and white meat only. And don't forget the biscuit that comes with it. They said without the biscuit it isn't as good. Makes you wonder if they loved the biscuit more than the chicken. Oh and the extra crispy gets a big thumbs up.Â
The third most popular meal on the menu was the hot dog. It was interesting to see that the hot dog was more popular than the hamburger, but not by much. As for how they liked their hot dog, that varied quite a bit. Some kids liked them just with mustard. Others preferred mustard and sauerkraut. And then there was that group of kids who enjoyed their hot dogs with ketchup. Nobody seemed to like relish or anything fancy on their hot dog and NO cheese dogs. That was another big yuck.
Just missing the number top spot and coming in at number 2 was macaroni and cheese. Again, don't try making this at home. This has to be, almost unanimously, Kraft Mac And Cheese. And of course no mac and cheese dish is complete without pouring ketchup all over it. By the time they are done with the ketchup you can just about see the mac and cheese.
Finally, coming in at number 1 was Hamburger on a bun was a sure winner. Again, nothing fancy as far as condiments. No onions was big on the list of yucks. Kids absolutely hate onions and don't want them anywhere near their hamburger. Just some ketchup is all they require. And the buns have to be hamburger buns. No regular hard rolls and certainly NO seeds. Also, no whole wheat buns or rolls.
And there you have it. The top 5 favorite foods of children. So if you're having trouble getting your kid to eat, you might want to start with these. If you need other favorites outside the top 5, at number 6 was pizza and at number 7 was peanut butter and jelly. Rounding out the top 10 was bologna at 8, salami and cheese at 9 and grilled cheese at 10.
A 6-month reprieve with Form 4868
The IRS has a simple form that allows you an automatic six-month extension to file your taxes. It's Form 4868 (.pdf file), and it's easy to complete -- even without an accountant.
The form starts by asking for your name, address and Social Security number. It then asks you to estimate your tax liability and send any balance due. If you make this payment and cover at least 90% of your real liability, you win. You won't owe a late filing or late payment penalty.
You can use the IRS' Free File system online, pick up the form at any IRS office or order it toll-free at 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). If you're using tax preparation software at home, you can file by computer and receive an acknowledgement by email.
You must file it by the regular due date of your return. It is an automatic extension. You don't have to give the IRS any reason. You can get it even if the only reason you haven't filed is that you were lazy or didn't want to think about it.
Form 4868 gives you until Oct. 15 to complete and send in your return. But, regardless of the form, if you think you owe money to the government, you must send it in by April 18.
You can ask for only one extension. So you really do have to file by Oct. 15.
