Recommendations for Preventing Salmonellosis
Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away.
Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.
Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for ground meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer.
Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.
The products subject to recall today bear the establishment number "P-963" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on August 23, 24, 30 and 31 of this year.

I talked with six people that lost their house in a fire today. One in Steiner Ranch and six in Bastrop. Every last one of them shared one thing in common--thanks. They were all grateful to make it out alive and for their pets and the few precious items they could carry with them.
They made it out with their lives, and not much else.
Then comes the hard part, the time to rebuild.
None of them have been even allowed back it to sift through the ashes.
My heart broke for each of the families, and for the hundreds more I didn't meet. They'll be in my prayers tonight.

A stage collapse prior to the Sugarland show at the Indiana State Fair Saturday night killed at least five people and injured 43. High winds were to blame for the accident, which occurred after opening act Sara Bareilles had finished her set. Those injured and confirmed dead were located in the VIP "Sugar Pit" area.
Following the incident, Sugarland tweeted, "We are alright. We are praying for our fans and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need our strength."
Sara Bareilles also tweeted, "I'm speechless and feel so helpless. Please send love and prayers to Indianapolis tonight. My heart aches for the lives lost."

Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation announced Wednesday an immediate voluntary recall of approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey meat because it may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
"I'd say it's one of the larger recalls," said Joel Brandenberger, president of the Washington-based National Turkey Federation, where he has worked for more than 20 years. Indeed, that's the weight of more than 36 fully-loaded Boeing 747 commercial airplanes.

An amateur astronomer put together an awesome time-lapse video of the Australian night sky over the ocean. The clip includes 30 hours of exposure (donât worry, itâs condensed down into two minutes and 41 seconds), which took over one year to compile.

A dust storm up to 50 miles wide and a mile high descended on the Phoenix area on Tuesday night, grounding flights, forcing drivers to stop and causing thousands of power outages.
Towering over skyscrapers and grounding flights, the wall of dust swept across the desert from the south at around nightfall, blanketing downtown Phoenix.
The National Weather Service said strong winds with gusts of more than 60 miles per hour moved the dust cloud northwest through Phoenix and the cities of Avondale, Tempe and Scottsdale.
More than a dozen communities in the area also were placed under a severe thunderstorm watch.

UPDATE!!! when she thought she was ready to leave (and she was) she flew off to her favorite patch of the back yard, and her instincts instantly kicked in, and now she's just like all the other hummingbirds. for those that are concerned that she has imprinted on humans and wouldn't survive in the wild, don't worry, she is thriving. she has even successfully migrated and returned back to my yard. and for those who think i didn't know what i was doing, i did NOT feed her plain sugar water. i went outside 3 times a day and caught flies from my compost bin in big bags, crushed them, and mixed them in as well. I also helped her learn to catch flies while flying (not in the video because you obviously wouldn't be able to see the flies). in the end, i don't think it could have worked out any better
Today I found out why zippers have a YKK on them.  The YKK stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (say that five times fast). In 1934 Tadao Yoshida founded Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (translated Yoshida Industries Limited). This company is now the worlds foremost zipper manufacturer, making about 90% of all zippers in over 206 facilities in 52 countries. In fact, they not only make the zippers, they also make the machines that make the zippers; no word on if they make the machines that make the parts that make up the machines that make the zippers.

Who says there's a recession going on?According to a new survey from the National Retail Federation, the average shopper will spend $106 on dad this Father's Day, up 13 percent from last year -- and the most in the survey's eight-year history.Of course, even this year's Father's Day takes a back seat to Mother's Day, where the average shopper spent $141.The top spending categories for dad include:
Grill Daddy. This gadget is a heavy-duty grill brush that drips water through the brush, creating steam. It really works. It comes in several styles and truly can make a filthy grill rack pretty darned clean. You can find them online for $12 to $50, depending on the model.
Cold Fire. This is a handy aerosol fire extinguisher that is inexpensive, doesn't take up much space and actually works. Priced about $20.
Big Top Cupcake. This silicone baking set makes it easy to make a fancy and unusual cupcake-shaped cake. Seriously. Also about $20.

If you didnât read the title of this article, and if you just glanced at these pictures, what would you think that was? Perhaps a beautiful piece of artwork created by a child? Or maybe a tapestry of colorful fabric? Who would ever guess that is a patch of three billion tulips?
Yep, this is where much of the worldâs tulips are grown each year. These particular flowers are in Holland, and they will be sent to supermarkets all over the world to be sold. Altogether, Holland produces about nine billion tulips each year, which equates to more than one for each person on the planet.
As you can see, tourists often gather around the flowers to inhale the aroma and appreciate this once a year phenomenon. I bet this is an incredible sight to see in person. It is only a short time each year when the colors of the flowers are this vibrant and rich.

Iowa bulldog Lucy Brown's slobber, sloth and bloodshot eyes helped the precocious pup grab the greatest crown a drooling canine can ever dream of.
The 3-year-old from Johnston, with a squat stance and slobber to spare, bested 49 dogs Monday to be named this year's "Beautiful Bulldog" for the Drake Relays in Iowa.
"She just thinks that the world goes around her. You know, Queen Lucy," said Nancy Brown, Lucy's owner, adding that the royal crown befits her beloved dog. "This is over the top."

In Slovakia veľkonoÄný pondelok (Easter Monday) is called Å ibaÄka/PolievaÄka or OblievaÄka. too. All countries practice a unique custom on this day.
In Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic[1] traditionally, early in the morning boys awake girls by pouring a bucket of water on their head and striking them about the legs with long thin twigs or switches made from willow,birch or decorated tree branches; however, the earliest documented[citation needed] records of Dyngus Day in Poland are from the 15th century, almost half a millennium after Poland adopted Christianity.
One theory is that Dyngus originates from the baptism on Easter Monday of Mieszko I (Duke of the Polans, c. 935â992) in 966 AD, uniting all of Poland under the banner of Christianity. Dyngus and Åmigus were twin pagan gods; the former representing water and the moist earth.
If you're a parent, you know that getting your finicky kid to eat is like trying to push a bolder up a mountain of molasses. It isn't easy. A kid's menu, at best consists of about five or six things that he or she will eat. So what's a parent to do? Well, at a recent survey taken in a small US town, about 100 kids gave the answer to their five favorite foods, not counting desserts. While this survey no way dictates that all kids will answer the same, this should give you a pretty decent idea of what you're kid will eat if you're having problems getting food in his or her mouth. So without further ado, our top five kids' goods.
Coming in at number 5 was no surprise. Spaghetti and Meatballs was the overall number 5 choice. Kids seemed to like this more out of the can than home made, however. And no fancy sauces like Marinara. Just plain out tomato or meat sauce was all they needed. Plus, no grated cheese on top. And not too many meatballs. Just 3 or 4 would be enough. Serving your kid a plate of spaghetti and meatballs would be more than enough to put a smile on his or her face.
In the number 4 slot was another food that was no surprise. Fried chicken. Parents, don't bother making this at home. Overwhelmingly, kids voted on Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken and white meat only. And don't forget the biscuit that comes with it. They said without the biscuit it isn't as good. Makes you wonder if they loved the biscuit more than the chicken. Oh and the extra crispy gets a big thumbs up.Â
The third most popular meal on the menu was the hot dog. It was interesting to see that the hot dog was more popular than the hamburger, but not by much. As for how they liked their hot dog, that varied quite a bit. Some kids liked them just with mustard. Others preferred mustard and sauerkraut. And then there was that group of kids who enjoyed their hot dogs with ketchup. Nobody seemed to like relish or anything fancy on their hot dog and NO cheese dogs. That was another big yuck.
Just missing the number top spot and coming in at number 2 was macaroni and cheese. Again, don't try making this at home. This has to be, almost unanimously, Kraft Mac And Cheese. And of course no mac and cheese dish is complete without pouring ketchup all over it. By the time they are done with the ketchup you can just about see the mac and cheese.
Finally, coming in at number 1 was Hamburger on a bun was a sure winner. Again, nothing fancy as far as condiments. No onions was big on the list of yucks. Kids absolutely hate onions and don't want them anywhere near their hamburger. Just some ketchup is all they require. And the buns have to be hamburger buns. No regular hard rolls and certainly NO seeds. Also, no whole wheat buns or rolls.
 And there you have it. The top 5 favorite foods of children. So if you're having trouble getting your kid to eat, you might want to start with these. If you need other favorites outside the top 5, at number 6 was pizza and at number 7 was peanut butter and jelly. Rounding out the top 10 was bologna at 8, salami and cheese at 9 and grilled cheese at 10.
A 6-month reprieve with Form 4868
The IRS has a simple form that allows you an automatic six-month extension to file your taxes. It's Form 4868 (.pdf file), and it's easy to complete -- even without an accountant.
The form starts by asking for your name, address and Social Security number. It then asks you to estimate your tax liability and send any balance due. If you make this payment and cover at least 90% of your real liability, you win. You won't owe a late filing or late payment penalty.
You can use the IRS' Free File system online, pick up the form at any IRS office or order it toll-free at 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). If you're using tax preparation software at home, you can file by computer and receive an acknowledgement by email.
You must file it by the regular due date of your return. It is an automatic extension. You don't have to give the IRS any reason. You can get it even if the only reason you haven't filed is that you were lazy or didn't want to think about it.
Form 4868 gives you until Oct. 15 to complete and send in your return. But, regardless of the form, if you think you owe money to the government, you must send it in by April 18.
You can ask for only one extension. So you really do have to file by Oct. 15.

GAS PRICES: Approaching Record High
Gas prices continue to rise. They've jumped nearly 20 cents in the last two weeks and are approaching a record high, according to a survey released yesterday. And the bad news is that they're not expected to go down any time soon with the continued unrest in the Middle East.
The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gas is $3.76, according to the Lundberg Survey. That's just 35 cents away from the record high of $4.11, which was set in July 2008.

There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.
As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.
The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, âHow long does it take you to catch so many fish?â
The fisherman replied, âOh, just a short while.â
âThen why donât you stay longer at sea and catch even more?â The businessman was astonished.
âThis is enough to feed my whole family,â the fisherman said.
The businessman then asked, âSo, what do you do for the rest of the day?â
The fisherman replied, âWell, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink â we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.â
The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.
âI am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. Thanks to a fluke of orbital mechanics that brings the moon closer to Earth than that it has been in more than 18 years, the biggest full moon of 2011 will occur on Saturday, leading some observers to dub it a "supermoon."

At its peak, the supermoon of March may appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons (when the moon is at its farthest from Earth), weather permitting. Yet to the casual observer, it may be hard to tell the difference.
The supermoon will not cause natural disasters, such as the Japan earthquake, a NASA scientist has stressed.
Spotting the supermoon
The moon has not been in a position to appear this large since March 1993.
In December 2008, there was a near-supermoon when the moon turned full four hours away from its perigee â the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth. We can never get enough cute-kid-with-pet videos. In this one, a little boy and his dog try to catch some Zs together. They're both sitting on the couch and can't seem to stay awake. The weird thing is they look surprisingly alike with their eyes closed.

Don't have time to watch all the ads from the Superbowl? Were you too busy eating Buffalo Wings and missed a couple? Here they all are in 2 minutes. These are TV ads so remember some can be a little PG13 . . .
1. They love unconditionally â This is the one thing that we should always take to heart. We can love without having to expect anything in return. This, I believe, is a gift. Love someone for who they are and not for what they can give.
2. They are loyal â No matter what happens, they will stick by you. There was a point in our lives when we lost everything, and that included some of the people we thought were friends, but our pets remained with us no matter what. Loyalty is a good trait to learn from our pets. Are you loyal to your friends and your family?
3. They will always ask for help â Our pets rely on us for their lives. They send signals to us when they are hungry or thirsty. We too should know when we need to ask for help. We all have our weaknesses, and it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help, especially when we need it. I am not saying to rely on others for your living, but what is important is to have the courage to ask for help when you need it. Do not be afraid to open up and talk to someone.
4. They never hold grudges â There are times when we need to discipline our pets when they do something wrong. However, one thing we can learn from them is that they never hold that against us. We sometimes hold grudges when we are being scolded. Being open to forgiveness and asking for forgiveness is important.
5. They know how to show appreciation â Our dog, Honey, always wags her tail when she is happy and especially when she is given a treat. Our cats purr and rub their bodies against us when we pet them. They are not afraid to show their appreciation. We too can learn from that. It is always good to tell others from time to time that we appreciate them or better yet, show them with a simple hug, kiss or through little tokens of appreciation.
6. They appreciate alone time â Our cats like playing with each other, but one thing I like about them is that they also value and can appreciate being by themselves. I know some people hate being alone, but I think there is also a balance. We should not be afraid to have our alone time. Take that time to develop and learn things that can benefit you in the long run.
7. They are nurturing â When our mom cat, Mallows, was alive, she was one of the most dedicated moms I have ever encountered. She would always make sure that the needs of her babies were met before her own. Even our dog, Honey, who thinks she is a cat, took turns taking care of the little kittens even though they were not her kids, and they didnât even belong to the same species. We could all learn to be nurturing to our kids. For those of us who are not parents, maybe we could learn to nurture our siblings. It never hurts to be loving and caring to others.
8. They are creative â I know some animals can sing and talk, while others are even cast in movies. Animals have a way of being able to show their creativity, and they are not afraid to do so. We too should hone whatever God-given talents we have and not be afraid to share them. We are all born creative. Maybe not in the same capacity, but we do have strengths that others can draw inspiration from.
9. They are who they are â Even if our dog thinks she is a cat, Honey is still the dog that she is. She barks, she behaves like a dog, and she does not pretend to be anything else. We too need to learn to be comfortable, and just be who we are. The only way we can find true contentment and happiness is by being able to find out who we are and to love ourselves. We do not need to pretend we are someone we are not.
10. They can live simple lives â Give them what they need, and they are happy. Give them extra, and itâs a bonus. We all can learn to be happy living a simple life. Some people go through life unhappy because they do not know the difference between what they need, and what they want. I am not saying we should not go for our goals in life, but I am simply stating that we can be happy even if we do not get everything we want. If we do get what we want, then consider it a bonus!
The American Kennel Club says the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog in America for the 20th straight year.
The German shepherd is ranked second, with the Yorkshire terrier third, the beagle fourth and golden retriever fifth.
The AKC also has added three dogs to its list of registered breeds.

Simply download the app for your iPhone, iPod Touch or Blackberry device and when you make a purchase, hold it out for the cashier to scan. The app deducts the purchase from your Starbucks account, which can be reloaded with credit cards or PayPal.
With any mobile payments system, the first question many ask is "will the people trust it?" After a year long trial, we're figuring that Starbuck's nationwide launch indicates that people indeed trust the service enough to use it.
