Spooky Songs

Every holiday has a song, or group of songs, even Halloween.  I must admit, I'm not one who gets into the Halloween hype, with all the costumes and talk of ghosts, goblins, and witches.  But, I have to admit there are some songs, either about Halloween or related to something scary, that I enjoy.    Almost everyone is probably familiar with Bobby Borris Picket's "Monster Mash," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller."  I like those songs, but they're not at the top of my list (perhaps because I've heard them a million times year after year).  One of my personal favorites is a song that came out around 1964 by Jumpin' Gene Simmons (no, not the Gene Simmons of Kiss Fame, at least I don't think he is).  The song is called "Haunted House," about a man who buys a house and refuses to leave when he discovers it's haunted, no matter how intimidating the "ghost" tries to be.    "Purple People Eater" is another of my favorites, although it's more amusing than scary, but it gets play during Halloween.  Other songs that aren't necessarily devoted to Halloween, but still have ties to its characters and traditions,: "Devil Woman" by British pop legend Cliff Richard, "Witchy Woman" by the Eagles, and Santana's "Black Magic Woman".    Obviously, this is only scratching the surface.  Feel free to post your favorite Halloween-related song or tradition.  I'm always open to your comments.    Enjoy the music!
