Often times hugs are either really awesome, or really awkward, right? Well, a new study has determined the telltale signs that a hug is genuine.

German researchers analyzed more than 2,000 embraces in an airport (in both the departures and arrivals terminals) for their study.

First and foremost, if you are leaning to your left that means your huge is more heartfelt than if you lean to the left.

Why is that? The right side of our brain controls emotions and the left side of our body. So scientists say when we’re feeling strong emotions toward another person we are naturally inclined to lean to our left when hugging that person.

And that’s just another reason why nonverbal communication is so important for how we interact. Experts say that our body language accounts for 55% of the message you’re giving someone, compared to only 7% from your words.
